How to Avoid Collision with Wild Animals on Highway?

Summer is a prime time bringing out the best of the nature and the time when truckers can enjoy while driving. Every bend has something new to offer the trucker. This can also be treated as a stress buster for the truck drivers as they have a hectic schedule to follow. After winter hues, it’s time for truckers to take some steps to ensure they have a safe journey.

Driving on smooth roads and cleaner environment, they are likely to see many different animals: from huge moose to small porcupines. As the summer drops in, many creatures tend to become more mobile and are usually found crossing the road and moving to the other end to find a new habitat. It is different to enjoy a scene like this and most importantly, it is entertaining for the truckers.

However, wildlife and trucks on the road is a lethal mix especially if they run over an animal. It is not only emotionally upsetting but can damage their vehicle to a great extend. Yes, larger the animal, bigger the collision!
Here are some ideas how to avoid hitting animals and moving without any damage:

  • Always be careful while driving in early morning, dusk or late nights. These are the times when animals are likely to move on the road freely.
  • If you spot any, slow down and look ahead into the ditch for movement. Don’t move until the way is clear. It might lead to large collision if proper measures are not taken.
  • Slow down and look ahead into the ditch for movement or for the reflection of animal eyes in your headlights.
  • Many animals travel in huge group. Therefore, when spotted one moving ahead, it is good to slow down, as others are on their way.
  • Some animals especially deer tend to freeze in the road as the headlight may panic them. In these cases, truckers should slow down and wait till they clear the way.
  • In case one discovers a large dead animal on the road, don’t panic. Ring the police and inform about the misfortune took place. The trucker can also contact the Department Of Transportation or Federal Highway Administration for further assistance. The body needs to be moved from the traffic lanes much before any chaos is created. There are chances for major accidents to take place if not reported on time.
  • Animals like Moose often attempt to escape through truck by running along the road. This will not only pose hazards to the vehicle but also the co- vehicles. It is not safe to drive in these situations. Pull over the vehicle or slow down to a low speed until the animal clears the track.
  • Above all, truckers should watch out for wildlife warning signs, which are posted in areas where animals are likely to share the road with them.

It is better to be prepared to face trouble than getting panic at the accident scene. Having a first aid box and an extra water bottle in the truck along with a flash light will be helpful. It is important for truckers to follow the safety precautions when behind the wheels to experience a smooth driving journey.

Update Information on Heavy Highway Vehicle Registration Renewal

When it comes to determination of HVUT or heavy Vehicle Used Tax, unladen weight of the vehicle has no role to play. HVUT proof is required only when the commercial vehicle is crossing more than 55,000 pounds or more combined gross weight (CGW).

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) no longer accepts evidences that the application has file their return to IRS. One and only proof which tax payer need to maintain along their other documents is HVUT form Schedule-1 copy. E-filers receive watermarked schedule-1 copy as a proof of their payment.

IRS does not accept partial payments nor encourage on the same for HVUT. So truckers, get your documents ready, July has already slipped in… It’s time to file your return to IRS, without any penalties or interest.

E-filing is one method which IRS recommends every tax filer to use. E-filing is the easiest, simplest and safest method, also saving time and energy. IRS requires tax payers with more than 25 vehicles should e-file form 2290 return, and receives their schedule-1 copy online.

Procedures for Renewal of Registration:

Any of the following may be accepted by DMV as a proof of HVUT payment for the renewal of registration:
  • Original or photocopy of an IRS stamped Schedule 1, Form 2290 (electronically watermarked or manually stamped.
  • Photocopy of the front and back of the cancelled check payable to IRS, clearing the entire payment.
  • Original or photocopy of an IRS receipted Schedule 1; Form 2290 listing the vehicle is exempted from filing taxes.
To get a clear idea about the IRS stamped HVUT Schedule-1, check the instructions for form 2290 @ IRS form 220 PDF or call our customer support @ 1-866-245-3918 to understand the requirement.

Background

Various departmental manuals, DMV VIN 2008-2 and Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Changes stated for HVUT proof, every commercial vehicle or buses with an unladen weight of 8,001 pounds or more that operate at CGW of 55,000 pounds. Federal Legislation eliminated partial payment method option, therefore evidence of making payment to IRS is not allowed as a proof of HVUT.

DMV VIN 2008-2, Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Changes, stated that tax payers should file their return electronically if they own more than 25 vehicles. Notification to memo is available online at http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/home/dmv.html under Publications made via California DMVs Automated E-mail Alert Service in November 2010.

HVUT Form 2290 claims and credits dealing with IRS

HVUT or Heavy Vehicle Used Tax is paid once in a year by calculating the miles and the weight you are carrying in your truck. There are situations like theft, stolen or destroyed; you can claim your tax amount from IRS through certain forms which are mentioned below in detail.

Following are the reasons and methods of claiming a refund:

Credit for sold Truck

In your previous years, you had to pay $550 tax for the whole year and if in the meantime you sold your truck in the same year, you would get nothing back. You would provide the form to the person you sold the truck and he does not require filing his turn for the year as you have filed it already. However, once you pay, your money is gone.

As the time passed by, the rules changed. If you sell for your truck, you can apply for a credit you paid out for the year. This rule is also applied when trucks were destroyed in a wreck or stolen. This policy was in effect for the tax period of July-1 2006.

If you want a refund on your payment to IRS, you need to be alert and apply it before June 30, of the current taxation year. IRS is certainly not going to remind you about your refund so, don’t forget to file. You need IRS Form 8849 (IRS Form 8849) and 8849 Schedule 6 (IRS Form 8849 Schedule 6) to claim a credit.

If you are looking out for more information, then call our customer support center @ 1-866-245-3918 or email to support@taxexcise.com

Claim from IRS:

As HVUT is a pre-paid filing, we just assume about the mileage and weight we would be carrying the whole year. If your vehicle does not cross expected mileage i.e. 5000 miles for commercial vehicles and 7500 miles for agricultural vehicles, you can claim a refund using form 8849 schedule-6

Reporting form 2290:

Other claims, you also need to remember that form 2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Returns is due the next month after the truck is put in service. For instance, if your vehicle is put on road in July 2013, the taxation year is due by August 31st 2013 is the last date for filing your return to IRS. However, this year, August 31st is falling on a weekend, so all the tax payers get two days grace period to e-file their return on or before the September 2nd. Also, the tax is pro-rated for trucks that are not in service for the full tax period. If you want to know more details about the same, check on 2290 instructions. The tax payment cannot be done partially, so tax payers get your full returned file and on time just to walk ahead of penalties and interest.

File VIN Correction Online and Get Schedule1 Copy in Minutes

Many tax payers do the mistake of entering the wrong ‘Vehicle Identification Number’, which is of 17 characters and a mixture of both numbers and letters. To err is human and there are chances of entering the wrong VIN especially when filing tax 2290 at the last hour. Let’s say, you might enter S instead of the number 5 and is likely to happen with others too. Neither you nor the system has indentified it but when you carry the schedule-1 copy to the DMV’s office, you realize the mistake done by you. There is no need to press the panic button but take the necessary steps to get a new schedule-1 copy with the corrected VIN number.

What is VIN?
VIN or vehicle identification number is a code given to automobiles, as identification of every vehicle. Until 1981, no specific standards were followed for allocating VIN, as well as different manufacturers use different format. However, in 1981 the ‘National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’ changed the format and made it mandatory that the VIN would be of 17 characters, without including the letters I, O, and Q. This helped in avoiding the confusion between the numerical 1 and 0.

The good news is tax filers and preparers can send an amended form for VIN correction and receive a corrected schedule-1 copy in no time. IRS or the Internal Revenue Service has made it possible for tax payers to e-file the right VIN and can be done the easy way with a reputed e-filing service provider.

Therefore, if you make any mistake or fill in the incorrect VIN this filing season, you can rectify the mistake, send an amended form 2290 online to the IRS, and get your schedule-1 copy with the corrected vehicle identification number. Previously, e-filing VIN correction was not possible, as it was to be mailed and posted to the Internal Revenue Service. Moreover, it took around 6 weeks for the IRS to send the corrected schedule-1 copy. However, the change took over in 2011 and tax filers had the benefit of receiving their schedule-1 copy in no time with the corrected VIN.

There are reputed e-filing service providers that not only made it possible for tax filers to e-file VIN correction but offered additional features such as tax alert and fax copy alert that gives the benefit of sending the schedule-1 copy through fax. Keeping in mind the busy schedule of truckers, this feature would help truckers get automated updates on their mobile number at the time when the tax filing season is nearing by. Subscribing the fax alert feature will help tax payers get their schedule-1 copy faxed to the assigned number, as soon as the IRS issues it.

Is Form 2290 needed on an Exempt Vehicle?

IRS Form 2290 is used to pay Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT). IRS Form 2290 payment is set up to help provide funding to federal states to repair the roads damaged due to running of Heavy highway vehicles. Extensive running of Heavy highway vehicles weighing more than 55,000 pounds can cause repairs on the road. Thus the taxes collected through IRS Form 2290 helps for the maintenance and repair as well as a variety of other programs to keep the roads to function properly.

Any vehicle that has a gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more requires a Form 2290 to be filed with the IRS. And the taxes are paid on vehicles which runs 5,000 miles or above.

We receive a many of calls inquiring If the Form 2290 is required on a vehicle runs less than 5,000 miles or mainly used for farming purposes?

Here is the answer:

A highway motor vehicle which runs 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles) is exempt from tax but still requires a Form 2290 filed on it.

Mileage use limit means the use of a vehicle on public highways 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles). The mileage use limit applies to the total mileage a vehicle is used during the Tax year, regardless of the number of owners.

1. Used (or expected to be used) primarily for
 farming purposes.
2. Registered (under state laws) as a Highway Motor Vehicle used for farming purposes for the entire period. A special tag or license plate identifying the vehicle as used for farming is not required for it to be considered an agricultural vehicle

As per the law there will be penalties imposed on the persons who are using heavy highway vehicle and failing to file the tax return Form 2290 OR filing the return after the due date. Even false filing or fraudulent returns will be penalized.

Another question arrives here: When exactly is the Form 2290 Due?

Due date to file Form 2290 is mistaken by many and they file it by the end of the Tax period. A Tax Period for Form 2290 starts from July 1st and ends on June 30th the following year.

The Form 2290 is always filed upfront on or before August 31st. Hence, it is due NOW for the current Tax Period July 2013 - June 2014.

IRS has mandate Electronic filing for each return reporting 25 or more vehicles that the taxpayer files during the tax period. However, IRS encourages all taxpayers to file electronically.
