EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System)


 The electronic federal tax payment system (EFTPS) is payment mode to pay your taxes to the IRS, it is provided free by the US department of treasury. Businesses and individuals can pay their federal taxes electronically over the internet or by phone 24/7. More than 9.5 million taxpayers are currently registered in the system. Since EFTPS started in 1996, there have been over 1 billion electronic payments made, totaling over $22.8 trillion. The service has been used by businesses, individuals, tax professionals and payroll services.
 
All types of federal taxes can be paid using EFTPS. You can make payments on www.eftps.gov, a voice response system, or special channels designed for tax professionals, payroll services, and financial institutions. EFTPS is fast, secured, and accurate and is available over the phone or online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can schedule a business payment up to 120 days in advance or an individual payment up to 365 days in advance.  
This is how it works:


STEP 1: Enrollment. To get started, you will need the following information:
  • Taxpayer Identification Number (Employer Identification Number if you're enrolling as a business or your Social Security Number if you're enrolling as an individual).
  • Banking account number and routing transit number.
  • Address and name as it appears on IRS records.
  • Log on to www.eftps.gov
  •  Select "Enrollment."
  • Select "Business," or "Individual," or "Federal Agency."
  • Enter the requested information and Submit.
 In seven business days, you will receive your PIN by mail.


STEP 2: Creating your password:
  • Log on to www.EFTPS.gov and click on "Log In."
  • Click on "Need a Password." Enter your EIN or SSN and your PIN
  • Verify your banking information or your EFTPS enrollment number (which appears on your PIN letter)                                 
  •  Create your new Internet password.
STEP 3: Making payments:
  • Log on to www.eftps.gov and select "Make a Payment."
  • Select "Log In" and use your EIN, PIN, and the password you created. Enter the payment information in the following screens.
 
When you're done, save a copy of the Payment Confirmation page. This contains your EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) Acknowledgment Number that is considered as a receipt for your payment instruction to the IRS.
